Services for Seniors
Homebound Service
Through Homebound Service, Lethbridge Public Library can provide lending services to those in Lethbridge that may not be able to physically visit our branches.
Who is eligible for the Homebound Service?
- Anyone who for reasons of ill health, disability, or convalescence is unable to come to the Library
- People confined to their homes especially during the winter months
How does the service operate?
Homebound Service can operate in two ways:
- 1) A homebound customer (the person requiring this service) can designate a friend, family member, or other trusted person to select and pick up library items on their behalf. This person will also be responsible for delivering these items to the customer and returning items back to the Library when they are due.
- 2) The Library will designate a trusted community volunteer who will select and pick up library items and deliver them to the homebound customer approximately every three to four weeks at a mutually arranged time. This volunteer will also be responsible for returning materials back to the Library when they are due.
Materials available include:
- Books (hardcover, paperback, large print)
- Audiobooks
- Music
- DVDs
- Accessible Library materials
Some restrictions may apply – will be reviewed by Library staff during the intake process.
Accessible Library Materials
Statistics Canada suggests that ~10% of Canadians may have a perceptual or print disability, which limits people’s ability to read in a traditional print format. Print disabilities may include:
- The inability to focus or move one’s eyes or to hear properly
- The inability to hold a book or turn pages
- Difficulty comprehending written words
To assist those with print disabilities, Lethbridge Public Library has partnered with the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) and the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS), which provide books, magazines, and newspapers in a variety of formats including DAISY discs, MP3, e-text, EPUB, braille, and more.
Lethbridge Public Library also offers the following materials for loan:
- DAISY discs or Talking Audiobooks
- VictorReader® Stratus 4M (DAISY player)
- VictorReader® Stream Players
- Books on CD
- e-Books or e-Audiobooks for computers, tablets & smart phones (Overdrive/Libby by Overdrive)
- Large Print Books
