The Moche civilization flourished on the north coast of Peru between AD 100 and AD 750.  Well into the 20th Century, the Mochica was known only for their beautiful and erotic
pottery and metal work, plus some disturbing scenes painted on their pottery and walls.  When Dr. Claire Allum visited the coast of Peru in the mid-1980s a dramatic scene was unfolding at Sípan involving pot-hunters, archaeologists and the military - what happened there was to radically change what we know of the Moche and explain the horrific scenes of torture and sacrifice seen in their art.

Speaker:  Dr. Claire Allum received her B.A. and Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Calgary and her M.A. from Trent University in Ontario.  She has participated in excavations in Alberta; at Dorset and Thule sites in Newfoundland and Labrador; in the tropical forest of Ecuador; in the highlands of Peru; in Ghana, West Africa; and last Spring at a Maya ceremonial centre in the jungles of Belize.
