Read On

Read On Volunteer Tutors:

Read On relies on adult volunteers to tutor adult students one-on-one or in small groups.  Each student’s goals will vary dependent upon their needs, which could be:  reading, writing, speaking or listening skills, studying for their Canadian Citizenship or driving license, or, ESL Conversation Classes.  Our students are either Adult Basic Education (fluent in English but need help with reading and writing) or English Language Learners.

Potential volunteers are asked to complete 6.5 hours of Tutor Training (2018 dates are Saturdays: September 15, and November 24 prior to being assigned a student.  Once a student is assigned, they meet for approximately one hour per week.

Time commitment for being a Read On Volunteer is: 6.5 hours of initial training, 1 hour per week of tutoring, approximately ½ hour per week to prepare for lessons and complete required statistics.  We would ask that you be able to volunteer with Read On for a minimum of 6 months.

If you would like to register as a volunteer please call Margaret Lyster 403.320.3133 or Elizabeth Entz 403.320.4977 or register online at

Read On Volunteer Child Minders:

Our program helps adult improve their literacy skills, but sometimes finding child care while on a limited income is very difficult – so they have to drop out. We need you on our team to mind their child(ren) while they are at their lessons. No training is required, but we do require Police, Vulnerable Persons and Child Intervention checks - which we will pay for if you do not already have them.

The library has a vast selection of books and toys for you to use while you are minding the children. You are not required to do programming with the children, you are simply minding them while their parents are at their lessons. The parents are required to be in the library the whole time their children are here.

Child minders will have a maximum of 4 children between the ages of 1 – 11 years, who do not require one-on-one attention.

Child minding will take place on a day and time convenient for you. We ask that you make yourself available for the same day and time each week for at least 4 months. We would request that you volunteer for a minimum of 2 hours each time to allow time for the parents to drop off their children, make it to class, and return to pick them up at the end of class.

If you would volunteer as a Child Minder, please call 403.320.4977 for more information or registered online at
