The Vast Green Ocean of Canada: Frontier in the National Imagination and the "National Interest"
Presented By: Professor Claire Campbell
Although we often define energy politics as a form of provincial nationalism – whether maîtres chez nous or letting the eastern bastards freeze in the dark – this talk explores a fundamentally Canadian theme at work: the resource frontier. Although the landscapes are different from east to west, they reveal our profound investment in extraction, on the one hand, and alibis – stories of environmental affinity – on the other. And they reveal our desire to ‘sustain’ nineteenth-century principles of nationhood into the twenty-first century.
